there is an energy about a person that says so much abut who they are. do you feel that too? the minute Lucie Lynch came into the room, she was present. her energy was friendly and ready and i could feel that this was going to be a great conversation.
every conversation is a great conversation in my Conversations with Strangers series, and this one felt like i was talking to someone i had known for years, but i did not know Lucie for years, met her only moments before in the green room.
you will hear multiple times where i invite you the audience to participate by becoming a part of the conversation and there is even a time that i ask you to take out your journal and start to writ your thoughts. this is a beautiful conversation, packed with tidbits that can be applied from the moment you hear them.
we talk about:
being too much

from the moment she entered the zoom room, i could feel her openness and friendliness. she was kind and communicative, and told me in the green room, nothing about this scares me and i am an open book, nothing is hidden. i knew we were going to have a great conversation.
imagine my surprise when a little later she told me that she has some issues with social anxiety when she is one on one with a person in real life. as if reading my mind, she answered the question that was coming to my lips saying, “over the computer i am fine, i don’t have that social anxiety but in person it is a different story.”
something else really surprised me CJ before she retired spent 20 years in the Air Force. honestly, i didn’t see that coming. and when i asked her, “what excites you?” she answered, “waking up each morning.”
there is so much in this conversation that i look forward to you hearing, but most of all, what i love is how 2 strangers, one a military person, the other a recovering hippie can sit together and feel so close to each other, not just in philosophy but in resonance.

i knew nothing about Cellin except that we went to the same college. Founded in 1963, Pitzer College is a top-ranked liberal arts and sciences college. The College emphasizes environmental and interdisciplinary studies, the arts, humanities and social, behavioral and natural sciences. With approximately 1,000 students, Pitzer College is part of The Claremont Colleges – a unique consortium of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions. The contiguous campuses share numerous programs and facilities. At Pitzer, students have access to all the resources of a major university while enjoying all the benefits of a liberal arts college experience and its personalized approach to education.
but we didn’t know each other at Pitzer either. Cellin took only 2 classes there while taking the rest of his course load at the consortium of the other colleges in the Claremont College family. i, too, took only a couple of classes at Pitzer, choosing instead to take advantage of the freedom they gave us to create our own curriculum. having taken all the courses i need to get my undergraduate degree i dropped out after two years and on my 18th birthday, put my thumb out and hitchhiked around the world.
Cellin entered into the world of film, becoming an associate director and then the executive director of a series of films.
hear our talk about Pitzer, about being born in japan but never being considered japanese, our conversation on the corona virus and being forced into quarantine the moment he entered canada, and a whole lot more. we did not agree on everything, but this felt like 2 college guys sitting together with a nice glass of scotch having a conversation. i hope you love being a fly on the wall and hearing what we say.

don’t let her youth fool you, this is a wise woman with a ton of knowledge and an ability to share information that is new to many of us, with an ease and certainty, that you can’t help to wanna learn more.
i love that someone is able to look at something we all see and see it differently, it always intrigues me and makes me wonder what else can be seen differently that the way i see it. Amya’s gift is to be able to interpret our handwriting. in the same way that our body language communities, the way we write the words we write and the signature we use tell her a story about the person whose writing she is looking at.

I felt her before I met her. It happened the moment she signed up to be on the Conversations with Strangers show. i can’t explain it, i just felt a resonance with her. and then in the text messages we shared to set up logistics, i felt it even stronger. here was a person, completely different from me (she is Indian and i am American, her skin is brown and mine is white, she is an attractive young woman and i am an older man) 2 people who outwardly shared nothing in common yet who believed so similarly to each other that it didn’t make sense; illustrating more than ever how important it is for strangers to meet each other and have conversations together.
this did not follow the standard format. Sukun is a listener too and she wanted to know about me as i wanted to know about her. and in the conversation, i could feel, as i am sure you will too, my words touching something inside her. that is how pure and sweet her heart is.
listen to our conversation around head and heart, and if you listen carefully, a lot of the questions i normally ask were answered without even being asked.
this is a must listen to conversation if you are in that all too common space between thinking and feeling. i know you will enjoy being part of this conversation, but please let me know what if anything, it brings up in you.

She can feel people and she knows from what she feels whether it is safe to open up to the person she is talking to. and she like everyone else, opens up when she feels safe and doesn’t open up when she doesn’t.

i could feel the beauty of her heart from the moment i met her, and . . . because her mind is very intelligent, she answers sometimes from that beautiful mind. but, there was a moment, which think you will be able to feel where her energy shifts. i could feel it, tangibly. i love when those moments happen.

watch this podcast to hear the beautiful innocence of someone who feels the world more than she realises and feel the love she has even though slightly hidden by the power of her mind. i loved this conversation and felt so nice in having this conversation.

it is hard to see Allen without noticing the big smile on his face. his energy os welcoming and kind, but according to Allen, he was not always this way. In fact, he was quite the opposite. angry and rebellious, his life took and even deeper turn towards pain and despair. listening to his philosophy teacher in college, Allen had an experience that took him quite by surprise.

listen in to this conversation to hear the honesty and the change that happens when he allows himself to be more truthful, to share his vulnerability and to embrace the difficult path of questioning the things that don’t make sense while still bringing honor and respect to the religion and the god that showered grace upon him.

hear us speak about faith, the church, the questions, the grace, the love of christ, fear of going the wrong way, being lifted up from the pit of despair, following a church even when it seems to deviate a little from what christ taught and how he lived.

from the very first moment i saw Emiliana, i knew this would not be a typical conversation and true to form it did not follow the format that i have for other shows. Everything about this, from the way i met her, to setting up the conversation to the actual conversation itself, felt different; but then again most things seem to work differently for Emiliana one of 13 children, she has become a Latin Jewish activist, Author, and strategist. She is hard to categorise and place in a box.

hear the story of how this woman who went to Harvard because of the way she looks and the color of her skin, is seen by the children in her sons class as being the nanny not the mother of her boys. can you imagine????

this is just one fo the many things we spoke about, hear how diversity is not enough and what is needed now to make real change. listen as we speak about inclusion and the party where we are stuck the corner and not allowed to participate, Black Lives Matter, colorisation and woman rights.

i loved this conversation. it was intelligent, insightful and too short.

my mom told me as a kid, “danny, need judge a book by its cover.” and am i ever happy i listened to her. as is my habit, i try to know as little as possible about the people that come into my room, so when at first Jamais didn’t show up on time after confirming the day before, i was not alarmed, but as time passed and still no Jamais, i sent one more email to him and hoped he would get it. he did and he showed up and apologised for being late.

he turned out to be a brilliant man with a very strong set of beliefs and it was interesting to hear someone say much of what i believe in a way that i would never say it. you are going to have to listen in to this show to understand what i mean.

after the show ended i shared with him how well he had done and said the only thing i wish would have happened that i would have been able to get beneath your brilliant mind and touch your heart. it was then that he shared with me that he was autistic.

it is wonderful to find someone so young who has such a big and beautiful vision of how to live her life. i knew nothing about Lovely when i came into the room and what i found from my very first question is someone who has thought life though and lived it intentionally. she has a plan that is clearly working for her and a desire to share what she knows with people.

her mind is strong, her heart is big and still she was able to admit that sometimes she is not in her heart as much as she would like to be. hear our conversation on trust, on giving and receiving, on leadership and on whether or not things in the world speak to us.
