there are moments in life where no matter how much we think we are headed in one direction, another direction manifests in front of us. what people do with that change often defines the happiness that the rest of their life offers them. i can tell you a lot more, but the story of Ruth Davenport so beautifully paints this picture, it would be foolish of me to explain more when you can just press play and listen to our conversation as she tells her story to you.

again and again, i am amazed at how close i feel to people who come into this room and have these conversations with me. it is so beautiful to receive an email like this from the stranger i just spoke with and know that both of us were touched by the conversation and now feel like friends, here is what ruth shared with me:

it is hard to imagine a time when this fireball of a man was not the way he is now, but when you listen to this conversation you will hear and understand the power of being hurt. to hear him speak, you would never know that who he is now is not who he always been. but as you listen more and linger on the spaces between his words, you feel him, you hear his vulnerability, and if you are lucky, you may even feel his pivotal moment and his decision to live again, come alive in you too.

from the moment i met adrian, i loved him. to be fully transparent, i was a guest on his podcast, “The Mind Man” and we both loved each other. so adrian is not a stranger and yet, i knew nothing about what he shared with me in this conversation.

what a delightful conversation. i love when i meet other storytellers and hannah is a beautiful storyteller. in the first few moments, i felt like she was recapping a conversation i had the day before with someone around turning The Mosaic book into a movie.

within the first moments, i found something i share with alice. her lineage is from Kiev and so is mine. she was the first person i have had a conversation with in this format who told me she has had coronavirus. she is a comedian and a nurse in a nursing home.

what is important to her is kindness and she is kind and smart and has a lot to say. she is a beautiful surprise. take the time to listen to this conversation and i think you will find it to be extremely interesting.

Jennifer is a saint. We recorded the whole conversation based on my set of questions, but the computer wasn’t recording and so we lost everything except the last 15 minutes. i couldn’t have the same exact conversation 2 days later, so this conversation is not like the others; instead we had a free form conversation. what i liked about this is that you get a sense of her beautiful leadership style.

see how adaptive she became when corona virus changed the conversation, how she dealt with conflict and how one of the best beauty schools in the nation dealt with the fact that they were ill prepared to cut the hair of people of color. this is a different conversation but a beautifully honest one too. rather than me speak about it, please have a listen.

there is an ancient saying the jews have, it says, “Man plans and God laughs.” well i am quite sure she is having a good laugh on me. there are days in our life where things just do not go as planned. where no matter how hard we try, something interrupts us. yesterday was one of those days.

i had a beautiful conversation with a stranger at 8am california time and it looks like i lost the entire conversation when my computer told me that i was out of space. but, i didn’t have time to worry about that as i still had three more conversations in the next 3 hours. my morning was fully booked and my zoom was not allowing me to record. i hit that space that i rarely hit, where i had no idea what to do. so i called my wife.

she is my guru when i don’t understand my computer. she set me up on her computer. i asked jennifer to exit and come back in and now it looked like this conversation was going to happen. i apologised profusely for being 30 minutes late for the recording and my dear friend jennifer was as kind as kind could be. we were going to finally have a conversation together and the beauty of it would be that we would capture it on zoom. everything was set. i pressed the record button, saw it record and off we went. speaking on beautiful, vulnerable, honest things that thrilled me.

but remember this was a day where man plans and god laughs. it seems she was not done laughing at me. what i did not see is that 5 seconds later, for no apparent reason, zoom stopped recording. i only noticed in 35 mines into our conversation. the conversation was lost and you can see my response when i finally realize what happened. jennifer is so kind and as much as she is an influencer to me and as much as she leads the places she works with, there is a gentle humility in her that doesn’t let her speak about her greatness in what she does. that is what i was hoping to capture in my conversation with her, and we had done just that . . . .

but, it didn’t record. so this is just a taste, a glimpse of the conversation that Jennifer has been so kind to re-have with me. i can’t help but this, this call in some ways symbolises our relationship. there is such a deep, heart felt love that we have for each other, a powerful mutual respect and yet something keeps from each other. i am hoping this conversation will initiate more conversations and that we will be able to continue to be there for each other in the way we both want to be. sometimes, what we get is what god wants to have happen. i am happy in the end i got to talk to my dear friend jennifer and sad that you did not get to hear the wisdom and how she shows up with such heart felt leadership in her day to day life. we will do a complete conversation soon. this is just a teaser to whet your appetite. 🙂

find out what she means when she says she is a blend between oprah, michael jordan and kanye west and a person who says she may be the most vulnerable honest person you might ever meet. and listen to how surprised she is that she is still alive today.

clearly, ana is not a stranger. she is my wife and so what is she doing on this platform. in all transparency, we have some great conversations together and one part of me wanted to share a conversation in this space, a space we hold for each other by having a conversation here together. i was interested to see what would happen.

the idea started when a friend of mine, who i haven’t seen or spoken to in like 20 years wrote me to say to me, i know i am not a stranger, but i would love to have a conversation with you. i immediately said yes and that conversation in now scheduled in my calendar. so i thought why not invite my wife to have a conversation with me because in all transparency, 2 things happened that made me realize, there are times when i don’t even listen to my wife. here are 2 of those situations:

several month ago, i was working on what i thought was going to be a trip around the world to sit on street corners and bookstores, government office buildings and board room in corporate america; hospitals and jails, homeless shelters and schools. my goal was to go anywhere people would have me and sit and listen to people who feel their voices have not been heard. i remember one day sitting in my chair planning something or another and my wife said something to me and asked me what i thought, i answered without even looking up at her and said, “yeah, i think that is a great idea.” she looked right at me and said to me, “you didn’t hear a word i said did you?” and i had to admit she was right. i apologised and we started the conversation over, this time with my full attention. so sometimes i get so busy that i don’t take the time to listen to what my wife wants to say to me.

the other situation is that sometimes i spend my whole day listening and talking to people that when my day is done, i do not want to have another conversation with anyone and so i am not available to my wife in the way i am to total strangers. i hate that. and so i thought it would be great to invite her to be a part of the work i am doing and to take conscious time to have a beautiful conversation.

ANA IS AMAZING! and i want you to see what i get to see all the time. she is a beautiful, sensitive, heart centred woman who loves deeper than anyone i know and is scared by what that really implies. but to hear more about this, just listen to this conversation. I KNOW YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!

i was having one of those days, i don’t have them often, but when i do, i have to laugh as i have no idea why i have an appointment on my calendar and what is going to happen in the conversation. i am normally way more intentional. but today, i had no idea why i was having this conversation with trina and it took us a few minutes in the green room to figure out what was going on. to be completely transparent, trina was not a complete stranger. i had spoken to her once before and i love what this woman is doing.

to find out more about who she is, just read her bio below. wow! but in this moment, it was as if a veil had been cast over me and i forgot why we were talking and we just started to have a conversation. i think you will love hearing what we said, i sure did.

you know a conversation is going to go well when within the first 3 sentences a person says 3 or 4 things that could have come right out of your mouth. i am continually amazed how connected we all are, i keep thinking the people i am drawing are people similar to me and that it’s not a really a representation of a real world demographic.

so i am asking anyone who reads this and/or listens to this conversation to invite people into the conversation room with me who see and think differently.  i want to know if we share something similar with everyone, even people we think we have nothing in common with.

having never meet, spoken to, written or even known that aparna existed before, i felt incredibly connected to her within moments. our lineage is from different countries, she is a woman and i am a man, she lives in the NE and i live in the SW. our conversation started out very professional but then something happened; there are times when things happen in the room and everyone notices it.

it doesn’t happen because one person is trying to change another person, it doesn’t even happen because of something that has been said, it just happens because both people are really present with each other, and in that presence both people somehow change. i invite you to listen to our conversation and see what you think.
